How to Use Lemongrass Aromatherapy

An essential oil you may not be very familiar with but should be is lemongrass. It has a fragrance that is clean and botanical with a hint of citrus. Not exactly grass or lemon, just clean and refreshing. Lemongrass aromatherapy is used for a variety of different purposes. As a mood enhancer, lemongrass is uplifting and energizing. If you want to scent your environment with this fragrance, try an aromatherapy candle. One example is the lemongrass scented candle by Lather, made with soy and scented with essential oils. Soy candles burn cleaner and often release a stronger scent, therefore they are preferred by many aromatherapy enthusiasts.

For practical use, lemongrass can work as an insect repellent, much like citronella. And, lemongrass itself is a common ingredient in various Asian dishes. Although the scent of lemongrass is energizing, it is also used for dispelling depression. Massage oil enhanced with lemongrass essential oil can soothe overworked muscles and is often used with other oils like peppermint and eucalyptus. This multipurpose oil is also quite affordable, more so than many other essential oils.

The popular company Bath and Body Works has a product in their Aromatherapy line called Lemongrass Mandarin. This oil can be applied to the pulse points, used for massage or even in the bath. It is stimulating for both body and mind. Even soap maker Dove has recognized the benefits of lemongrass and include it in their Energizing Grapefruit and Lemongrass Scent. As you can see, this popular scent pops up in all kinds of places. If you prefer the scent on its own, all you need is a bottle of essential oil, found online or for sale in a variety of health food stores and organic supermarkets.

To use lemongrass aromatherapy via essential oil, try gently waving the bottle under your nose as you slowly inhale. An alternate method is to dab a drop or two on a tissue and smell the tissue. You can scent your car by stashing cotton balls scented with a few drops of oil under the seats. It can be added to the bath, and to unscented lotion. A strong dilution with jojoba oil makes a lovely fragrance, just avoid applying lemongrass oil directly to your skin. Also, although lemongrass is a common cooking ingredient the essential oil is not for human consumption.
